Students will create a KWL Chart focusing on the Melungeon people---Before, During, and After Reading Strategy----Perfect for Research
Introduce Jesse Stuart--Author of Daughter of the Legend
Introduce novel and discuss why we are reading this particular book.
Discuss common medical disorders associated with Melungeons:
FAMILIAL MEDITERRANEAN FEVER--Hereditary geneticall restricted disease (inflammation of the lining of the body cavity, fever, dry cough, renal failure, foggy headedness, fatigue, infertility/pregnancy loss)
SARCOIDOSIS--Fibrotic lung disorder (small, round lesions of granulation tissue, fever, weight loss, joint pain, liver problems, cough, tender red nodules on the skin)
THALASSEMIA--Rare blood disorder (Can't produce enough red blood cells and cannot properly utilize iron.  Anemia, fatigue, slow growth pattern, shortness of breath, jaundice, spleen enlargement, bone deformities)
Behçet's SYNDROME--Relapsing, multi-symptom inflammatory disease (oral/genital ulcers)

Also, discuss a few common physical characteristics associated with Melungeons:
Shovel shaped incisors (enhanced marginal ridges and present with a distinctive shovel-shaped appearance on the lingual aspect)
Anatolian bump (EXTERNAL OCCIPITAL PROTUBERANCE) knot found at the base where the skull meets the spinal cord.  Does not mean a person is Melungeon, but this characteristic is more common in people of Melungeon descent
